🤝 The Leadership Multiplier: Why Great Leaders Develop People, Not Just Results

Earlier this year, I wrote about the importance of planning with clarity and intention. More recently, I explored how quarterly reviews help leaders assess progress, realign priorities, and stay connected to what matters most.

Both are important leadership disciplines.

But eventually every leader encounters a deeper question:

Who will help carry the vision forward?

The longer I coach leaders, business owners, and executive teams, the more convinced I become that sustainable growth is rarely limited by strategy alone.

More often, it is limited by leadership capacity.

Not just the capacity of the leader—but the capacity of the people around them.

Results Matter. People Matter More.

Many leaders begin their journey by focusing primarily on results.

They set goals.
They solve problems.
They drive execution.

And for a season, that approach works.

But as organizations grow, leaders eventually discover that success cannot be sustained through individual effort alone.

At some point, growth requires multiplication.

It requires developing people.

The Difference Between Addition and Multiplication

A leader who accomplishes great things personally creates value.

A leader who develops others creates capacity.

The first adds.

The second multiplies.

This is one of the reasons leadership development is not a luxury—it is a strategic necessity.

When leaders invest in helping others grow, the impact extends far beyond a single project, initiative, or quarter.

They begin creating future leaders.

Development Begins With Awareness

One of the most common misconceptions about developing people is that growth starts with instruction.

In reality, it often begins with understanding.

What are this person's strengths?

What motivates them?

What opportunities would stretch them appropriately?

What support do they need?

The best leaders I know spend less time trying to make everyone the same and more time helping people become the best version of themselves.

They look for potential before performance fully reveals it.

And they intentionally create opportunities for growth.

Coaching Instead of Rescuing

Many leaders fall into a common trap.

They become the answer person.

Every problem comes to them.
Every decision comes through them.
Every challenge requires their involvement.

While this may feel helpful in the short term, it often limits growth for both the leader and the team.

Developing people requires a different approach.

Instead of immediately providing answers, leaders ask questions.

Instead of solving every problem, they help others learn how to solve problems.

Instead of creating dependence, they build confidence.

Coaching creates ownership.

Ownership creates growth.

And growth creates capacity.

A Leadership Legacy

One of the most powerful questions leaders can ask is:

Who is growing because of my leadership?

Not who is performing.

Not who is producing.

Who is growing?

Years from now, most people will not remember every goal that was achieved or every metric that was exceeded.

They will remember leaders who believed in them, challenged them, and helped them become more than they thought possible.

That is the work of multiplication.

And that may be one of the most important contributions a leader can make.

The Takeaway

Plans matter.

Quarterly reviews matter.

Execution matters.

But organizations rarely outgrow the leadership capacity of the people within them.

Leaders who invest only in results may experience short-term success.

Leaders who invest in people create the possibility for lasting impact.
